Living in the Present

Spiritual Practice: Throughout the day, be aware of your feelings as they happen, allowing one feeling to give way to another one as events and circumstances change around you. Instead of holding onto one emotion, allow it to move as the next one comes along, much like a baby who can go from crying to laughing in a matter of seconds. Don't try to change any feelings; just observe them.

Spiritual Practice: Be aware of when you're dwelling on the past. Ask yourself what it's doing for you. Does it inspire you? Or does it keep you stuck? Does it cause you to keep repeating your misguided past? Or does it help you in some way? Remember, first and foremost, the lessons learned rather than the story behind them. They will serve you as you act in the present moment—the only time that really exists.

Spiritual Practice: If you're worried about the future, affirm: “What I do now creates my future. If I make spiritual effort now, my future will improve. I concentrate on the present moment and let the future take care of itself."

Spiritual Practice: As an exercise in living in the present, the next time you have a conversation with someone, really listen to what the other person is saying to you, rather than thinking about what you're going to say next. Ask questions for clarification or for more information. Listen empathically, and when it's time for you to respond, let it flow naturally rather than be words you may have rehearsed ahead of time.

Spiritual Practice: Remember that the present is the only time you can think, act, and make a difference. The past is gone. Learn what you need from it and apply those lessons in the present moment. The future is beyond your reach, though it is inextricably linked with the present. Think, make necessary plans, and take actions in the present, one task at a time. Affirm: “I live in the present moment, the only time in which I can make a difference in my own or others' lives."
