Selecting a Spiritual Quote to Study

Spiritual study is an essential foundation of a spiritual life. If we’re not regularly reading the thoughts of great spiritual teachers, we’re probably rehashing all the old ideas in our consciousness, some of which might not be particularly uplifting or beneficial. Regularly spend time reading spiritual books for new insights and inspiration.

I suspect that most people are like me when it comes to spiritual reading. If what I’m reading is fascinating or inspiring, I just keep reading page after page. It’s okay to read spiritual books in that way, but if that’s all we do, we’re missing out on a deeper, intuitive method of spiritual study that leads to increased understanding, inspiration, assimilation, and ultimately, direct realization of truth. (This method is discussed in the article, How to Practice the Meditative Method of Spiritual Study.)

As you read a chapter or an article, pay attention to any passages that particularly jump out at you or resonate with you. Mark them, and then, after you’ve finished the article, go back and reread these passages. You can pick one of them to study for a day or more, to dive more deeply into the meaning and access the kernels of truth. Take note also of those sections that offer practical spiritual methods. You can use these ideas when you decide how to practice the spiritual principle you’re focusing on.

Another option is to study the quotes under your chosen topic in the ExperimentsWithTruth.com database. (You can use the link provided in the My Experiments program to access these quotes, after you’ve chosen your topic. Or access the collection through the Spiritual Quotes page.) Studying the quotes in the database gives you different perspectives on the spiritual topic you’ve chosen. Again, if one of them especially inspires you, select it for your spiritual study session.
